After spending six years on Vancouver Island, I found my way to the small town of Voglers Cove along Nova Scotia’s South Shore. Living this close to the ocean feels like a dream - beautiful beaches just down the road, salty air, and endless places to explore with my pups, Birdie and Hennessy. We spend a lot of time by the water, whether it's watching shorebirds scavenge for food, surfers chasing waves, or me attempting to do the same (learning to surf is a work in progress!).

I’ve always been someone who holds onto moments. My  new phone's camera roll? It’s sitting at well over 2,000 photos and videos, and I can’t bring myself to delete a thing. Those tiny snapshots - voices, smiles, everyday moments - are everything to me. Some of them are all I have left of the people and pets I’ve loved. That obsession of preserving memories spills over into my professional life, shaping the way I document the connections and stories that matter most.

When I’m not behind the camera, you’ll probably find me buried in a book, hunting down the best pizza spot, or soaking up time outdoors with my pups. My world truly revolves around them.

HENNESSY

BIRDIE

The first thing people say when they see Hennessy is "what breed is she??". I wish I had an answer. I adopted Henny through the BC SPCA after her mom and several other dogs were seized from a backyard breeder.

Hennessy is my little wild child. Despite being only 2kg soaking wet, she has the sass and stamina of a dog ten times her size. She loves being outdoors and getting totally filthy. I couldn't ask for a better adventure partner.

Birdie is from Tijuana, Mexico and came to Canada through a rescue during the summer of 2020. Many rescues down south were having to close their doors due to Covid 19 which left several dogs needing to be transported. Luckily she found her way to me.

Birdie is quiet and easy going. She enjoys the little things in life; the sun on her face, soft sand under her paws and a warm blanket at night. I learn a lot from her on a daily basis; the biggest lesson being to slow down and enjoy what's right in front of you.

"I think sometimes we can love a moment so much that a part of us stays inside it forever. When we are upset or distracted, when we want to take a break from the world in front of us, we retreat to those memories; flickering like old film reels inside our minds, pulling us back to a place we can feel, a place we can practically reach out and touch.

So if you ever see me staring blankly out over my steering wheel at a stoplight or gazing at an empty space above your head mid-conversation... forgive me, l've only gone home for a moment." - Brianna Madia
